Unisys Corp. said Thursday that it will cut 4,000 jobs from its worldwide payroll in 1995 as it continues to shift its focus from hardware to services.

The computer and information services company has three facilities in Orange County with a total of about 2,000 employees. Worldwide, the company employs about 46,900.

Officials at Unisys headquarters in Blue Bell, Pa., could not be reached for comment on where the cuts are likely to be made. Officials at the company’s 200-employee western regional sales and service office in Santa Ana could give no details.

The company’s manufacturing facility in Rancho Santa Margarita and engineering office in Mission Viejo were closed for the holiday weekend.

If the work force reductions include the Orange County operations, they are likely to be at the manufacturing or engineering facilities. In its announcement, Unisys said that all of the cuts will be in the hardware manufacturing and development side of its business.

At the same time, Unisys said, it plans to add more than 2,000 jobs in its services area through 1995.

The company said it will give details of the restructuring late next month, when it releases its financial results for 1994. As part of the staff reduction, the company said, it plans to take a one-time charge of $175 million to $225 million for the current quarter to cover severance and other layoff-related expenses.

The layoffs will be spread across Unisys’ U.S. and overseas operations, a spokesman said. Employees will be given 30 to 60 days’ notice in the United States and more time overseas, he said.

The restructuring is expected to yield annual savings of at least $200 million by the end of 1995, Unisys said.
