Descendant of Walter Knott Regains Consciousness : Recovery: Desire Anderson, 17, the great-granddaughter of the park founder, was bludgeoned at her San Diego County home last month.

The great-granddaughter of the founder of Knott’s Berry Farm has regained consciousness, a month after she was bludgeoned by an unknown attacker in her San Diego County home, officials said Thursday.

Desire Anderson, 17, of Fallbrook was moved to an undisclosed rehabilitation center in San Diego on Wednesday after regaining consciousness at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where she had been hospitalized since the Nov. 28 attack. Her condition was upgraded to fair from serious, hospital officials said.

But investigators, who have not interviewed Anderson, said they do not expect her to lead them to the attacker.

“Even if she recovers 100%, it’s not likely she’ll remember anything,” said homicide Lt. Doug Clements of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators have said Anderson might have been asleep at the time of the attack, which occurred shortly after midnight.

Anderson’s grandmother said Thursday that she was too shaken to discuss the girl’s condition.

“She’s really not lucid,” said Marion Knott of Newport Beach. “I think being in rehab is a hopeful sign.”

Family members had offered a $10,000 reward for information in the attack.

Clements said police have no leading suspects and have dismissed a number of tips. Among the suspects who didn’t pan out was a parolee who lives in the same semirural neighborhood where Anderson lives on a four-acre ranch with her mother, Diane Anderson. Attempts to reach Diane Anderson were unsuccessful.

Desire Anderson, the great-granddaughter of park founder Walter Knott, is a senior and honor student at Fallbrook High School. Relatives said she excelled in French and was also training as a competitive figure skater. She had planned to apply to colleges this month in hopes of becoming a doctor someday, family members said.
