Latin Trade Bloc Unites 4 Countries: Latin America’s newest economic trading bloc brings one step closer the dream of a hemispheric free trade zone. The Mercosur customs agreement unites Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay in a market of 190 million people with a combined gross national product of $800 billion. The agreement eliminates 90% of the tariff barriers that affect trade among the four countries. The remaining 10% affect strategic industries such as auto manufacturing and computers, but are expected to be lifted by the beginning of the next century.
