Larson’s ‘Far Side’ Fades to Black

Your eyes aren’t deceiving you this morning, Far Siders. Gary Larson’s wacky, award-winning strip is gone from the comics pages because the cartoonist is retiring, as was announced in October. The last “Far Side” appeared Sunday.

His reasons for retiring are varied, Larson said. However, “they mostly center around simple fatigue and a fear that if I continue . . . my work will begin to suffer, or at the very least ease into the ‘Graveyard of Mediocre Cartoons.’ ”

Larson, 44, will continue working on the calendars, books and greeting cards that the strip, syndicated in 1980, spawned.
