2 Chicano Studies Activists Are Honored
Two Anaheim High School seniors recently received scholarships for their involvement in the community.
Javier Loera and Sergio Ramos, both 17, have been involved in a movement to try to get Chicano studies courses taught at their high school and on college campuses throughout the county, said Judith Serafini, communications director of Solevar Community Development Corp., a nonprofit Chicano activist organization that helped secure the scholarships.
Each recipient received $500 scholarships.

Pianist, 13, Wins Concerto Contest
Jody Chou, a 13-year-old pianist from Irvine, recently won first place and $300 in the 1994-95 concerto competition at Saddleback College.
The event was sponsored by the college’s music department, the Music Teachers Assn. of California and the American String Teachers Assn. Chou is an eighth-grade student at Venado Middle School who studies piano privately under the guidance of Margery Ellesmere-Jones.

Singer Has Plans for $3,000 Scholarship
Singer Rachel Anise Wegter, 16, recently won first place in a talent show at the California Christian Youth Convention at the Anaheim Hilton.
Wegter attended the event with a high school youth group from Grace Community Church of Seal Beach.
A junior at Los Alamitos High School, Wegter received a $3,000 scholarship she plans to use at either Pacific Christian College in Fullerton or San Jose Christian College. She has sung with her church choir and in local recitals, and gives voice lessons.

He Wins Grand Prize for Calendar Art
Corona del Mar High School student Matt Hedley is the grand prize winner of the recent High School Art Calendar Contest. The contest was sponsored by Irvine Valley College, Pacific Bell and the Art Store of Newport Beach.
Hedley will receive $250 for his drawing, “Green Leader Standing By. . . .”

Junior Carpenters Plan Wood Kit Class
The Junior Carpenters Club for children ages 7 through 12 will be on Wednesdays between Jan. 18 and Feb. 8, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Adventure Playground, 1 Beech Tree Lane, in Irvine.
Sponsored by the city’s Community Services Department, the program will teach children how to use tools and materials to create and build various wood kit projects.
