A 26-year-old Pomona man who was shot and wounded by a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy remained in critical condition Wednesday at St. Luke Medical Center in Pasadena, authorities said.

Mark Allen Maynard was shot Sunday morning in the chest and arm in Altadena after he allegedly fractured the left shoulder of a deputy by throwing a 30-inch-long fire extinguisher at him during a foot pursuit, sheriff’s officials said. The injured deputy’s partner shot Maynard.

The deputies responded to a burglary in progress call at about 2:30 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 1900 block of East Washington Boulevard in Altadena.

When they arrived, they saw Maynard standing in front of the building. Deputies called him over, but he ignored them and ran to the rear of the building, said sheriff’s spokesman Matthew C. Rodriguez.

The deputies followed Maynard on foot. As they rounded the corner, one of them tripped and fell in front of Maynard, who allegedly was hiding.

The fallen deputy’s partner turned to check on him and saw Maynard holding a large metal fire extinguisher above his head, Rodriguez said. Maynard then allegedly threw the extinguisher, striking the fallen deputy on his left shoulder. The other deputy fired three rounds to protect his partner, Rodriguez said.

The suspect then ran to the front of the complex where he collapsed on the sidewalk.

Maynard was arrested on suspicion of burglary and assault on a police officer.
