Spotlight on achievers

Michael Scott Belknap

Community services supervisor, La Palma

La Palma Employee of the Year for 1994.

Belknap, the city’s community services supervisor, started his municipal career in 1986 by working part time as a recreation leader. He earned his current post in August, 1991.

“Mike received this well-deserved honor for always being there to help fellow employees and assist wherever needed, for whatever task the city may have,” said City Clerk Brigitte Charles.

Belknap holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Cal State Fullerton and has chaired the city’s United Way campaign.

Gregory Long and Melissa Orme

Assistant professors of mechanical and aerospace engineering, UC Irvine

Named National Young Investigators by the National Science Foundation.

Long and Orme are among 197 scientists and engineers selected nationwide to receive the award.

The foundation was impressed by Long’s research into computer-designed products. Orme’s work developing new materials for metallic engineering parts also won praise.

Both live in Irvine.

John Chodera

Senior, Westminster High School

The first recipient of the Scholar’s Choice Certificate from Cal State Long Beach.

The accolade entitles Chodera to discounts at all athletic and performing arts events and at the Student Union bookstore.

Chodera’s 4.6 grade-point average, the highest of any Westminster High School senior, was a prime factor in his being selected for the honor. He plans to study engineering in college.

Robert C. Maxson, president of Cal State Long Beach, presented Chodera with the award. The award includes automatic admission to the university.

Gary L. Hausdorfer

Former Councilman, San Juan Capistrano and Daniel H. Young

Former mayor, Santa Ana

The pair received the newly commissioned Visionary Leadership Award from the Orange County Division of the League of California Cities.

Hausdorfer was rewarded for his work as the first city official to chair the Orange County Transportation Authority. Young was recognized for gathering support for Measure M, the half-cent sales tax that funds new and better transportation.

The Visionary Leadership Award spotlights those who have made a tangible improvement to the quality of life in Orange County.
