Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : $4,000 Bike, Tools Stolen as Garage Robbers Strike Again

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor cold, nor any other lousy weather could keep a band of garage burglars from the swift completion of their unappointed--and unwanted--rounds.

Four garages in a Canyon Country housing complex were burglarized during Southern California’s recent rainstorms, the latest in what authorities said is a rising number of incidents.

The group of bandits, thought to be one of several working in the area, stole several thousand dollars worth of property, including a $4,000 custom-built mountain bike, car stereo equipment and power tools in the most recent break-ins.

The latest rash of burglaries occurred in a new block of condominiums near the Antelope Valley Freeway between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, according to sheriff’s reports. The burglars forced open doors to the garages.

Detective Chris Christopher of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said garage burglaries have increased significantly in Canyon Country since the summer. Investigators are following leads and have arrested several suspects during the past few months, he said, but more than one group is thought to be behind the thefts.

“They’ve been following a path up and down Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway,” Christopher said.

No one has been arrested in connection with the latest incidents.
