Santa Ana : School Collects Cans, Cash to Get Backstop

Share

Students at an elementary school are seeking donations of aluminum cans to help raise money for a $2,500 playground backstop, school officials said.

The students at Walker Elementary School have collected and recycled enough cans since the start of the school year to raise about $200 toward purchase of the equipment.

School Principal Robert De Berry said that, although the school is 16 months old, it is not fully equipped.

“Everyone thinks being a new school is wonderful and you’re rich, but we’re not. There’s a lot of needs we have here, including P.E. (physical education) equipment,” he said. While the drive is intended to teach students about recycling and working toward a shared goal, De Berry added that school officials would happily accept cash donations to help pay for the backstop.

Donations can be dropped off at the campus or mailed to: Walker Elementary School, 811 E. Bishop St., Santa Ana 92701.
