COVER STORY : Tips for Running Smart

Before you wrap a Walkman around your head and venture off, here are some common-sense tips:

* Always try to run with a partner in case you are injured. Besides, there is nothing like a partner to urge you on and take your mind off of the pain you’re inflicting on your body.

* If you decide to run alone on a remote trail, park as close to the trail as possible and leave a note on the dashboard with your name, destination and the hour you expect to return. If park rangers come upon your car and find that you did not return on time, they can begin a search for you.

* Stretch and don’t overexert yourself. Know your limits. It’s easy to lose yourself in the outdoors and become dehydrated, which leads to the next tip.

* Try to bring along a container of water. Many sporting goods stores sell small, lightweight water containers that strap to your waist. Although drinking fountains are only steps away from some trails, your own supply of water ensures you don’t dehydrate.

* Watch your step. Although many paths within city-operated parks are well-maintained, gopher holes and erosion in mountain trails can create hazards that could result in sprained ankles or other injuries.
