Many Throughout Cypress Back Recall

The article “Warehouse Foes Direct Recall Effort at Two Officials” (Dec. 31), quotes Mayor Cecilia L. Age’s comments concerning the recall effort.

These comments exemplify the distortions and deceptions that have led to the recall effort.

Age states that the council had acted “in the best interests of the entire city,” implying that the recall effort is limited to the residents in the southern corner of Cypress directly impacted by the proposed 24-hour trucking distribution center.

This couldn’t be further from the truth and is one of the principal reasons that she and Gail H. Kerry will be recalled from office.

The City Council was presented with a petition signed by over 2,000 residents stating their opposition to 24-hour truck/warehouse operations in Cypress. The citizens signing this petition reside throughout Cypress, not just the southern end.

Age also incorrectly states that the proposed warehouse would bring the city $800,000 to $1.2 million a year in taxes; the city’s own report estimated only $800,000 per year before any offsets. But the warehouse is only the catalyst for the recall movement.

The real issue relates to the arrogance of elected representatives who, once in office, think they know better than the people what is best.
