THOUSAND OAKS : Water District Cited for Saving Energy

Share

Calleguas Municipal Water District has received two awards for its efficient and innovative use of a resource--not water, but energy.

The first award is from another utility, Southern California Edison. Edison representatives will present Calleguas with a plaque and a $19,000 check at the water board’s Jan. 18 meeting. The money will be used to subsidize an energy efficiency study and to offset the cost of installing high-efficiency pumps and motors.

The second award, from the California Energy Commission, names Calleguas one of 10 “showcase utilities” in the state. Rob Schlichting, a spokesman for the commission, said the honor recognizes the district for its use of variable-speed pumps and for an underground storage program that will use the energy from water falling into wells to generate electricity.

“We’re trying to be good stewards of the public’s dollars,” said Pat Ford, a consultant to the district who works on energy issues. “It’s gratifying to be recognized.”

Calleguas supplies water to 500,000 customers in Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Camarillo, Oxnard and nearby unincorporated areas.
