A Lancaster teen-ager died Monday morning after his car swerved across the center divider of Pearblossom Highway and smashed head-on into an oncoming pick-up truck, authorities said.

The 6:12 a.m. crash near the highway’s intersection with 121st Street East killed Brent Garland, 18, and injured the driver of the truck, Toni Kazmi, 37, also of Lancaster.

Minutes before, a witness called 911 on a car phone and told officials that a Honda sedan was weaving across both lanes of the highway.

Garland was swinging the car so wide that he was snaking from the dirt shoulder on one side of the road to the other, according to officials.

“The witness was on the phone calling 911, and the Honda was literally all over the road,” said California Highway Patrol Officer Lee Elvert. “All of a sudden the Honda just made a left turn right in front of the pickup. The guy in the pickup didn’t have a chance. It was just that fast, that quick.”

Sheriff’s deputies were on the way to the scene at the time.

Paramedics pronounced Garland dead at the scene at 6:22 a.m.

CHP officials suspect Garland was under the influence of drugs, but are awaiting a coroner’s report before they finish their investigation.

Kazmi suffered a torn ear, broken ankle and cuts to his face and head after his truck flipped over in the crash. He was taken to Desert Palms Community Hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit.

A hospital representative said Monday afternoon Kazmi was in stable condition.

The accident closed the eastbound lane of the highway, just outside of Pearblossom, for about an hour and a half, officials said.
