GARDEN GROVE : Council to Vote Today on Emergency Action

Share

The City Council will meet in a special session today to consider declaring a state of local emergency because of the flooding that hit several areas of the city last week.

Such a declaration would enable residents to qualify for state and federal assistance, officials said. The council will meet at 5:10 p.m. at the Community Meeting Center.

Assistant City Manager Mike Fenderson said that city officials are still evaluating the extent of the damage from Wednesday’s flood.

He said about 85 homes in the city’s western end were damaged when floodwaters, spewed from overflowed flood-control channels, reached as deep as six feet.

But he said there were no reports of structural damage. Apartments and commercial buildings were spared. Damage was limited to Barlett, Manley and Casper streets on the city’s west end and Anthony Street near Springdale Avenue, he said.

Also damaged were the Belgrave flood-control channel, where part of a cement wall gave way, and the entrance to the Twin Lakes flood-control basin. Part of the park’s asphalt jogging and biking paths also were damaged, he said.

But Fenderson said the city was bracing for continued bad weather and will keep the flood assistance center in Fire Station 4 at 12191 Valley View St. open to residents.

Residents may call for help in pumping out water or picking up flood debris at (714) 537-6530 or (714) 537-6964.
