The girls’ soccer showdown that seemed as though it would never happen turned out to be no contest. No. 1 Marina thoroughly dominated No. 2 Los Alamitos, winning, 6-0, in a Sunset League opener Monday at Marina.

It was the Vikings’ 47th consecutive game without a loss.

The game was originally scheduled for Thursday, but heavy rains inundated Marina’s field. With continuing rains during the weekend, Monday’s game seemed an unlikely occurrence, but with another storm threatening to wash out games this week, Marina officials worked hard to prepare the field.

The field, shortened by several yards on each end to protect newly planted grass in front of the goals, was mostly free of puddles, but there was plenty of mud.

“It feels good,” Marina Coach Bobby Bruch said, “going from not knowing if we were going to play, to getting six goals.”

Marina (9-0), which outshot the Griffins, 16-1, dominated play from the start, but wasn’t able to break through until the 28th minute when midfielder Kristen Palmer scored her first of three goals. Three minutes later, Gina Giallonardo’s shot from outside bounced off a defender to Cassie Campbell, who scored her first of two goals.

Bruch said his team was upset that it only scored two goals in the first half.

“We thought we should have been up by four,” he said. “We missed a few easy chances.”

The second half provided plenty more and Marina usually converted. In a flurry, Marcy Crouch scored on a corner kick five minutes in, Palmer scored after a scramble 10 minutes in and Campbell scored after another rebound 15 minutes in.

Marina never let up. With about three minutes to play Palmer volleyed in a crossing pass from Campbell.

Los Alamitos (9-3-1) never got into the game; its only shot was a weak header by Carrie Hawkings midway through the second half.

“We were disappointed in the way we played, but give Marina credit, they took advantage,” Los Alamitos Coach Rich Manning said. “I don’t think it was such a soccer thing; they just played harder than we did.”
