Media arrogance once again shows how ugly it can be with the CBS treatment of Kathleen Gingrich’s “bitch” statement about Hillary Clinton (Jan. 5). Connie Chung in her questioning of Newt Gingrich’s mother was obviously searching for some gossip about Bill Clinton. Bad enough, but for Chung to pursue this line with “Why don’t you just whisper it (Newt’s alleged comment about Hillary) to me, just between you and me?” and then flagrantly publicize the answer is unconscionable.

For CBS News President Eric Ober to justify their position by saying “Gingrich’s mother volunteered an unsolicited view” leads me to wonder if Ober has a father?

* It was definitely a mistake for Newt Gingrich to confide in his mother his opinion of Hillary Clinton. It is outrageous that he criticizes CBS for airing his mother’s quote. Doesn’t he know that Connie Chung was not there for a social visit? In America we believe in the First Amendment.

* Should CBS apologize to Newt Gingrich? Absolutely--just as soon as Gingrich apologizes to 1) the First Lady for calling her “a bitch,” 2) the President for labeling him a “counterculture McGovernik,” 3) George McGovern for turning this fine and decent man’s name into a pejorative, 4) the White House staff for baselessly accusing them of illegal drug use, and 5) the entire Democratic Party and tens of millions of Democratic voters for calling them “traitors” and “the enemy of normal Americans.”

* Rush Limbaugh: one who speaks what many of us think. Mrs. Gingrich: ditto!
