Angels, Davis Agree on Three-Year Deal

Share

The Angels have reached a tentative agreement with designated hitter Chili Davis on a three-year contract for about $11.25 million that is awaiting approval from owner Jackie Autry, sources said.

Davis, voted the Angels’ most valuable player by his teammates last season, also is awaiting permission from the Major League Players Assn. to sign a contract. The union has placed a ban on the signing of new contracts.

If the two sides are unable to formalize their agreement by Jan. 18, they must submit contract figures for a pending arbitration hearing. Davis and San Francisco Giant outfielder Darryl Strawberry are the only players who were tendered salary arbitration before the owners implemented their salary structure.

“We were pretty close before the (Dec. 23) implementation hit,” Angel General Manager Bill Bavasi said, “but now the players’ association is prohibiting any signing. There shouldn’t be any problem, but right now we’re waiting them out.”

Davis, 34, batted .311 with 26 home runs and 84 runs batted in last season.
