OXNARD : Trustee Chosen for Washington Visit

Oxnard School District Trustee Mary Barreto will travel to the White House and Congress next month to discuss issues concerning Ventura County and California students.

Barreto was one of 20 trustees chosen by the California School Boards Assn. from among the state’s 5,000 board members, said Sherry Loofbourrow, a spokeswoman for the association.

The visit, scheduled from Jan. 31 to Feb. 4, will give educators the opportunity to influence U. S. laws on education and lobby for federal funds for their districts.

On Wednesday, the school district’s board of trustees unanimously voted to pay for Barreto’s trip to Washington.

“We need to let Congress know how their policies affect our local schools,” Barreto said. “I particularly want to push for more funds for special education.”

Barreto is the first Ventura County trustee selected to the association’s task force on education.

Barreto was chosen because of her “interest and ability to understand a variety of educational issues,” Loofbourrow said.
