In 1954, an Old West theme park called the Buffalo Ranch became the first outside business to open on the Irvine Ranch, according to the book “Irvine.”
The ranch became a popular tourist attraction, luring thousands of visitors to the rolling hills off Jamboree Road.
The ranch included 110 bison from Kansas as well as other livestock. Ranch workers dressed in cowboy outfits.
But the star of the park was Chief Kuthle Geronimo III, the grandson of the great Apache chief.
The Buffalo Ranch closed in the 1960s. But the ranch buildings became home to the architects who designed UC Irvine and Newport Center.
Today
Friends of the Fountain Valley Library is celebrating its 30th birthday with a luncheon party at 11:30 a.m. in the library’s community room.
The public is invited to attend and there is no charge for the luncheon. Stan Chambers, KTLA-Channel 5 news anchor, will be guest speaker.
