House Speaker Newt Gingrich has announced his appointments for the Republican California task force, led by Rep. David Dreier of San Dimas. The group will be championing legislation dealing directly with the Golden State.

The three vice chairmen assisting Dreier are Reps. Jerry Lewis of Redlands, Christopher Cox of Newport Beach and Wally Herger of Rio Oso.

“California is key to our nation’s future,” Gingrich said in a statement. “I fully expect David Dreier will lead the task force in a manner that provides coordination and guidance to ensure that the House of Representatives responds to the needs of this nation’s largest state.”

This is the first time a special congressional task force has been formed for a single state. There are no plans to have one for any state other than California.

Although congressional Republicans won big at the polls in November, Democrats contended that California lost political muscle. Before November, the state boasted five committee chairmen in the House, all Democrats. It now has only one--Rep. Bill Thomas (R-Bakersfield), who chairs the House Oversight Committee.
