BREA : ‘Investing in Youth,’ Mayor Sets Goals for Her Year at the City’s Helm

“Investing in Brea’s Youth” will serve as Mayor Bev Perry’s theme for 1995.

Quoting an African proverb, “It takes an entire village to raise a child,” Perry said she will try to help the city maintain its family-oriented atmosphere during her one-year term as the city’s top elected official. She took over the post in December.

Her goals for 1995, she said, are ensuring a healthy financial future for the city and focusing on the quality of life.

A key to achieving the financial goal, she said, is safeguarding Brea’s interests in the Orange County bankruptcy crisis. Perry said she will work to retrieve the entire $9 million Brea had in the county’s collapsed investment pool, whose losses forced the county to declare bankruptcy Dec. 6.

Perry also said she would:

* promote continued economic development;

* help conserve the natural beauty of Brea’s hillsides and canyons;

* renew the city’s master plan for parks, recreation and human services;

* initiate new public safety programs.

Preserving library services is also a priority for Perry. “Our already decimated public libraries are going to take another hit,” she said, referring to anticipated cutbacks of county library services. “We’re going to need a lot of ideas in this area.”
