FULLERTON : Ordinance on Trees Gets Initial Approval
An ordinance that would restrict the planting, maintenance and removal of trees throughout the city has been given preliminary approval by the City Council.
Under the law, property owners would be required to water all trees that are in the public right-of-way abutting their homes or businesses. They also would be prohibited from performing any construction work on public or private property without making sure trees won’t be damaged.
In addition, trimming the tops of public trees will be barred without city approval. Poisoning, planting, removing or replacing city trees also would be prohibited.
The law would also set conditions under which owners would be required to remove dead or diseased trees or those infested with harmful insects.
Violators of the ordinance could face fines equal to the repair or replacement of damaged trees.
Should City Council members give final approval to the ordinance, it would take effect in March. The council is expected to approve the tree law at its meeting Feb. 7.
