Gender-Equity Bill Proposes a Wait on Vasectomies
If women must wait 24 hours before receiving an abortion, so should men who want vasectomies, a state lawmaker says.
“This is a gender-equity bill,” said Republican Rep. Dave Bishop, who introduced the measure last week. “What’s sauce for the goose should be sauce for the gander.”
Bishop’s bill counters a proposal tacked onto a welfare-reform bill that would require women considering abortions to receive medical information about the procedure and the name of the doctor who will perform it 24 hours in advance.
An attempt to add the vasectomy proposal to the welfare bill failed Friday by a vote of 8 to 6 in a House health panel. But the proposal is still alive as a separate bill.
