In Barbara Leverich’s comments about my fees (Letters, Dec. 18), she states that she was asked to hand over $2,500 before I would even consider her case. My firm only requires such a retainer after we have fully considered a client’s case, have determined it is meritorious and only after we have agreed to represent the client.

Further, many of the clients we undertake to represent are unable to pay any retainer fees at all, but we have represented them through trial and even appeal without any fee being paid. We have always considered that, in many key cases, protecting and vindicating individuals’ rights is more important than securing a retainer fee. In the future, we will continue advocating and asserting constitutional rights.
