CAIRO : The Refugee Question

Share

Palestinian officials will meet in Cairo on Saturday to coordinate policy for talks with Israelis on the sensitive issue of Palestinian refugees returning to the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. No date has been set for the full-scale talks.

At stake is the fate of those Palestinians who fled the Gaza Strip and the West Bank during the June, 1967, Arab-Israeli War. The Arab side says that between 500,000 and 800,000 Palestinians and their descendants qualify as displaced persons. The Palestinians want all the displaced persons to have the right to return.

Israel agrees some should be allowed to return. But it disputes the numbers.
