GOOD MORNING, CSUN! ABC-TV’s “Good Morning America” may broadcast live from Cal State Northridge in mid-February to mark the anniversary of the school’s reopening after the Northridge earthquake. . . . But in order for the show to air live in the East, it must go on here between 4 and 6 a.m. Since “we don’t want to do it in the dark,” producer Pat Tague says he is looking for an indoor location for the broadcast.

SOARING COSTS: United Airlines, the only Burbank-to-Denver carrier, will raise fares $20 each way after March 6. These and other Denver fares are going up because the airline’s fees at Denver’s new airport will soar by $175 million. A 14-day advance-purchase round-trip ticket will climb from $467 to $507. “We have to cover our costs,” said United’s Alan Wayne.

CABLE COP: Robert Thoreson, above, is a cable pirate’s worst nightmare. . . . He’s Cablevision Industries regional security manager, and he says the industry is cracking down on people who illegally pilfer cable service. Since beginning enforcement last year, Thoreson’s investigators have collected 1,200 local cable boxes (B2).

NEW YEAR: Chinese New Year 4693 did not pass unnoticed Tuesday in the Valley. . . . Cheng Jing, 15, and 72 other Chinese exchange students began the Year of the Pig studying English at Hale Junior High in Woodland Hills. Teachers celebrated by giving students their pocket change, a Chinese custom. But it wasn’t the same, Jing said. “In China, all our family relations would give us pocket money,” Jing said. “We just got pocket money from our (six) teachers.”

GOOD HEARTS: Los Angeles City Councilwoman Laura Chick is planning a council ceremony this month to honor the Northridge Hospital Medical Center doctors and nurses who flew to quake-ravaged Kobe, Japan, last week to offer relief. . . . “That’s the kind of private humanitarian effort that the City Council wants to highlight,” she said.
