A 43-year-old woman survived a 220-foot fall off the Golden Gate Bridge on Tuesday with only minor injuries, authorities said.

The woman was spotted in the fog by a bridge patrol sergeant at 7 a.m. after she had climbed over the railing on the bridge’s south tower, said Coast Guard spokesman Jeff Murphy.

“He saw the woman on the pipe there, then she let go,” he said. “She fell right into the moat around the tower pylon.”

A Coast Guard rescue boat picked the woman up as she swam in the moat, which protects the tower from collisions. She complained of cuts and bruises and a pain in her arm, he said. She did not discuss why she jumped.

Paramedics took the woman to Marin General Hospital, where she was in stable condition, said spokeswoman Paula Avirett.

The woman was unofficially reported to be the 25th known survivor among those who have jumped or fallen off the bridge.
