COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Louisiana State Loses, Awaits Word on Livingston’s Injury

After missing a season because of ligament damage in his right knee, Louisiana State point guard Randy Livingston had returned to lead the nation in assists at 10 per game.

He made the Tigers, 10-7 overall and 4-3 in the Southestern Conference, respectable, but they lost him 7:01 into a 105-81 SEC defeat at No. 8 Arkansas on Tuesday and await word on the severity of his injury.

It’s the same knee.

Livingston was trying to stop a layup by Arkansas’ Corey Beck. Livingston fouled Beck on the play, landed hard and was taken from the floor in a wheelchair.

“There is nothing wrong with the ligament, as far as we can tell now,” Deann Koehler, LSU co-head trainer, said from the locker room during the second half. “He has pain over the kneecap.”

Arkansas Coach Nolan Richardson met Livingston in a tunnel under the stands and was told, “I’m all right.” Arkansas (17-4, 6-3) lost Dwight Stewart, who has started 66 games over the past three seasons, because of a sprained right knee.

Livingston, a freshman, had aggravated his knee injury earlier in the season and was wearing supports on both knees. He was to be taken to Birmingham, Ala., where Dr. Jim Andrews, who repaired Livingston’s knee surgically in July of 1993, will examine him.

No. 3 Kansas 99, Colorado 77--The Jayhawks broke slowly against Colorado (10-7, 1-5) in a Big Eight game at Lawrence, Kan., turning the ball over 11 times in leading by only four points at halftime and earning a stern lecture from Coach Roy Williams.

A 10-1 Kansas run early in the second half put the Jayhawks (16-2, 5-1) in control for good.

No. 4 Connecticut 82, Miami 57--The Hurricanes (8-8, 3-6) gave Ray Allen the outside shot all night, and he took advantage, making a school-record eight of 12 three-point attempts in scoring 25 points in leading UConn’s victory, its 26th in a row at home--in Hartford on Tuesday, Storrs on most other days--and 14th in a row in the Big East.

UConn (16-1, 9-0) had lost its last game, 88-59, to Kansas.

Cuonzo Martin scored 23 points and 29-of-31 free-throw shooting carried Purdue (15-5, 6-2) to a 76-66 victory over Indiana (12-8, 4-4) in Big Ten play at West Lafayette, Ind. . . . Marc Molinsky scored 23 points and Boston College (7-10, 1-8) snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 74-69 victory over Pittsburgh (5-13, 1-9) in a Big East game at Newton, Mass. . . . Junior forward Phil Rodman scored 17 points and Boise State (14-4) went to the free-throw line 55 times in a 77-68 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (1-18) in Boise, Ida.
