GLENDALE : Action Delayed on Shopping Cart Law

Share

Action on a new Glendale ordinance designed to make it easier for supermarkets to store their shopping carts was postponed this week after several store operators complained it would hurt, not help them.

The City Council delayed until March 28 its consideration of the ordinance, which would allow markets to store shopping carts outdoors on the premises without obtaining a variance from the city, which is currently required.

Under the new law, the markets would be required to build a wall at least 3 1/2 feet high around the area where the carts are stored to shield them from public view.

The ordinance also would drop the current requirement that store owners get a city variance to place vending machines outdoors. Instead, they would be required to build a roof overhang or eaves above the machines.

The council was set to vote on the matter Tuesday, but decided not to after representatives from several stores complained that the costs associated with the ordinance would outweigh the benefits.
