CAMARILLO : Sheriff’s Deputy Hurt During Gun Training

A member of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Special Weapons and Tactics team was injured Thursday afternoon when his handgun accidentally discharged and wounded him in the right leg, authorities said.

Senior Deputy Dave Lareva, a nine-year veteran of the department, sustained the injury shortly after 2:30 p.m. at the department’s shooting range at the Camarillo Airport, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Paul Anderson.

“Fortunately, it was a through-and-through wound,” Anderson said. “The bullet did not strike a bone or apparently any major arteries.”

Lareva was taken to St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo.

Anderson said Lareva, a four-year member of the SWAT team, was going through a routine training exercise and was taking his gun out of its holster when the gun discharged. The bullet struck him in the lower right leg and exited out his right calf.

A nursing supervisor said Lareva was released from the hospital late Thursday afternoon.
