Zampese to Interview for Rams’ Head Coaching Position

Ernie Zampese, Dallas Cowboy offensive coordinator, will interview for the Rams’ head coaching position after his Pro Bowl assignment Sunday in Hawaii.

Zampese, former Ram offensive coordinator, had indicated in the past that he had no interest in becoming a head coach in the NFL. In discussions Thursday, however, he said he now has an interest in the Rams.

“We have always been under the impression that Ernie had no interest,” said Steve Ortmayer, Ram vice-president of football operations. “Ernie said, however, maybe we have some things now to talk about.”

Ray Rhodes, San Francisco defensive coordinator, had been atop the Rams’ wish list. But Rhodes signed a five-year deal Thursday to coach the Eagles.

“Philadelphia offered him a job; he told us that when we interviewed him,” Ortmayer said.

“He wanted to know if we were prepared to do that. We told him no. There was a process we were still going to follow.”

The Rams already have talked to Oregon Coach Rich Brooks; Joe Vitt, Ram assistant head coach, and intend to continue discussions with Wisconsin Coach Barry Alvarez.
