Dan Quayle may already have a potential campaign manager under consideration for his expected 1996 presidential run.

David Doyle, who declined to seek a third term this year as chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, notified Gov. John Engler that he would lead the Quayle team, Engler spokesman John Truscott said early Friday.

Later in the day, however, Truscott said Quayle’s campaign committee was unprepared to make the announcement and he called the job only a “potential opportunity” for Doyle. Neither Doyle nor Quayle spokeswoman Anne Hathaway would confirm the report.
