The Senate Banking Committee chairman said he expects congressional hearings on Whitewater to begin by early May and hopes the independent counsel’s investigation could be wrapped up by year’s end.

The hearings will focus on Whitewater papers that were removed from the office of Vincent Foster after the deputy White House counsel committed suicide July 20, 1993, according to Sen. Alfonse M. D’Amato (R-N.Y.).

D’Amato commented Friday during taping of “John McLaughlin’s One on One,” a syndicated television program.
