Search Continues at Mt. Baldy

Share

Searchers on Sunday continued looking for a 24-year-old Costa Mesa man missing since he went snowboarding in off-limits territory nearly two weeks ago, but the volunteers again had no luck.

Michael Pilotti disappeared under an avalanche on Jan. 24 when he went snowboarding with a friend, Larry Beard of Laguna Hills, who survived. Police, firefighters and forest rangers have used search dogs to look for Pilotti.

Temperatures are warming in the Mt. Baldy area, but snow drifts remain deep after several storms dusted the mountain during the past two weeks, San Bernardino sheriff’s officials said.

On Sunday, local mountain areas were mostly sunny, and no snow or rain is expected in the areas within the next week, according to WeatherData, which provides weather forecasts for The Times.

Search teams have shrunk over the past week because volunteers had to return to their regular work. About 100 volunteers returned to the mountain to look for Pilotti on Saturday, but numbers dwindled again Sunday.
