LOS ANGELES : Police Panel OKs Unit for Sex Harassment Complaints

Share

The Los Angeles Police Commission on Tuesday gave its blessing to establishing an independent, civilian-staffed office to investigate complaints of sexual harassment and other job-discrimination accusations in the Police Department.

Citing the need for a way that complaints can be made and investigated with confidentiality and discretion, the commission approved creating the unit and asked the City Council for the estimated $800,000 needed to staff the office for a year.

The proposal for the office grew out of public hearings last spring by the council’s Personnel Committee, which heard complaints of sexual harassment within the LAPD.

Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg, who chairs the Personnel Committee, hailed the commission vote as “a good step for everybody” because it allows complaints to be lodged and looked into and any inappropriate activities stopped without ending the careers of those involved.
