ANAHEIM : Face Lift for Convention Center Will Be Studied

Share

The City Council on Tuesday unanimously voted to hire one of the nation’s top six accounting firms to study the financial feasibility of a plan to expand Anaheim Convention Center.

Coopers & Lybrand, which has conducted similar studies for convention centers in New York City, Las Vegas, New Orleans and Denver, will be paid more than $90,000 for about four months of work.

A proposed $60-million expansion of the facility is part of the city’s plan to stay competitive in the tourism industry by giving its convention center a major face lift.

The facility, which is owned and operated by the city, currently has five exhibit halls and a 9,000-seat arena. It is across the street from Disneyland.

The purpose of the study will be to ensure that any investment of the city’s resources into such an expansion is economically justified, city officials said. The analysis will also include an assessment of the market for enhanced convention facilities in Anaheim.

The money to pay for the study, which also includes reimbursable expenses of up to $15,900, is from the Convention Center’s 1994-95 reserve fund, officials said.
