RANCHO PALOS VERDES : Apparently Healthy Boy Dies During School Jog

It is unclear why a 15-year-old boy died shortly after jogging in a morning gym class at Dodson Junior High School earlier this week, authorities said.

San Pedro resident Casey Davis collapsed around 10 a.m. Monday after jogging about a quarter of a mile around the Rancho Palos Verdes school campus, which is part of Los Angeles Unified School District, said Richard Vladovic, who oversees 28 area schools.

Davis appeared normal during his first period and homeroom classes, Vladovic said. The boy was not taking any medication and was otherwise healthy, he added.

“He was a very happy-go-lucky young man,” Vladovic said.

He said Davis collapsed in the middle of a half-mile run at the beginning of gym class. The gym teacher, another teacher and a school nurse administered CPR and massaged Davis’ heart when they could not detect a pulse. They were able to bring back Davis’ pulse twice, as the boy drifted in and out of consciousness, Vladovic said.

Davis was taken to San Pedro Peninsula Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The county coroner’s office said an autopsy on the body was scheduled for late Wednesday afternoon.
