The judge who will hear the murder case against Susan Smith asked that no monuments be erected at the lake where her sons drowned until after her trial. The state Natural Resources Department has agreed to the request.

Circuit Judge William Howard has set Smith’s trial for July 10, a month or two after landscaping was expected to be completed for a playground designed as a memorial to Michael and Alex Smith.

The judge said it was likely the jury would visit the shore of John D. Long Lake. Smith confessed to letting her car roll into the lake with the two boys strapped into safety seats, police said.
