Sept. 1--Soccer officials investigate allegations that players in Malaysia and Singapore accepted bribes from bookmakers to fix games. By early February, 90 players had been arrested.

Sept. 28--Casino Salzburg goalkeeper Otto Konrad is hit by a bottle thrown by an AC Milan fan in a European Champions League game. Milan wins the game 3-0, but UEFA takes away the points as a punishment and orders the Italian titlist to play its next two home games away from San Siro stadium.

Nov. 9--Zimbabwean goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar is accused by a British tabloid of accepting a $62,000 bribe to rig a game while playing for Liverpool against Newcastle. Grobbelaar denies the accusation, but still must answer charges brought by the Football Assocation.

Nov. 25--Arsenal and England forward Paul Merson admits he is hooked on gambling and alcohol and has used cocaine. Merson spends six weeks in rehabilitation before returning to action in early February.

Nov. 30--Giovanni Selmin, deputy police chief of Brescia, is stabbed as AS Roma fans attack police after a game in Brescia. Twenty-one police and 12 fans are treated for injuries.

Dec. 11--Arsenal manager George Graham is accused of breaking the rules by receiving a $416,000 gift arising out of the transfer of Danish midfielder John Jensen via a Norwegian agent. The English Premier League sets up a committee of inquiry and the tax authorities also start to investigate transfer deals handled by agents.

1995

Jan. 25--French striker Eric Cantona leaps into the crowd and aims a kick at a taunting fan during a Crystal Palace-Manchester United game in London. Cantona, who also punches the fan, is banned for the rest of the season by United. He faces further action by the English FA, as well as possible charges.

Jan. 25--A brawl at the Bordeaux-St Etienne game in France leads to five players being suspended. Bordeaux’s Didier Senac expects to face a 10-game ban.

Jan. 29--Genoa fan Vicenzo Spagnolo dies after being knifed by a teen-age AC Milan fan prior to a league game. It is the sixth soccer-related death in Italy in 16 years. The game is abandoned and, the following weekend, all domestic sport in Italy is canceled.

Jan. 31--In Argentina, Racing Club’s Claudio Garcia is accused of running off the team bus and trying to attack an Independiente fan who had been goading him.

Feb. 2--Diego Maradona, coache of Racing Club, is fined $2,100 and ordered off the bench after insulting a referee. Earlier in the season, another referee accused Maradona of chasing him into the dressing room and kicking the door.

Feb. 7--French fan Douadou Atout dies two days after being shot by a rival supporter at an amateur soccer game at Drancy, north of Paris.

Feb. 7--England forward Denis Wise is warned he may go to jail after he is found guilty of assaulting a taxi driver and damaging the cab window. As a result, Wise is dropped from the England lineup against Ireland.

Feb. 8--Chelsea fans invade the field after their team is beaten by London rival Millwall in the English F.A. Cup. Mounted police on the Stamford Bridge field keep most of the fans apart, but 19 are charged and 11 police injured.
