A summary of selected City Hall actions last week that affect the Westside.

CITY COUNCIL

* JAPAN’S SCHINDLER--Approved a resolution honoring Yukiko Sugihara and her late husband, Chiune Sugihara, the onetime Japanese consul general to Lithuania who is often referred to as “Japan’s Oskar Schindler” for his efforts to save Jewish people fleeing the armies of Adolf Hitler. The Sugiharas, against the orders of the Japanese government, wrote 1,600 visas to Lithuanian and Polish Jews in 1940. Since an entire family could travel on a single visa, the Sugiharas are credited with saving between 3,000 and 6,000 Jews from concentration camps. After the war, Chiune Sugihara was fired by the Japanese Foreign Ministry for insubordination. He died in 1986.

* WESTCHESTER GIRL SCOUTS--Approved the closure of 87th Street between Sepulveda East Way and Truxton Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 25 for the Westchester Girl Scouts annual Tasting Bee. The Tasting Bee is an international food fair in which the Scouts prepare foods from various countries and charge 20 cents a taste. Proceeds go to a Girl Scout fund.

HOW THEY VOTED

* AID FOR AIDS--Authorized the city controller to award a $2.8-million contract to Aid for AIDS, a nonprofit organization that will serve as the central coordinating agency for housing programs for people with AIDS. The contract expires at the end of the year. Passed 14-0. Voting yes: Marvin Braude, John Ferraro, Ruth Galanter, Jackie Goldberg, Nate Holden, Mark Ridley-Thomas.
