Chinatown Rings in the New Year
Out with the old, in with the new is taken literally this time of year in Chinatown. In celebration of the new year, the Year of the Boar, new clothes are worn, houses are cleaned and old debts are paid in preparation for a year of good luck and prosperity.
On Saturday, a 100-foot golden dragon will emerge with a burst of firecrackers for the 2 p.m. parade. The dragon, a symbol of guardianship and vigilance, was considered a sacred animal in ancient times. In a classic dragon dance, there are complicated maneuvers that require about 100 men who work in relays, taking several hours to complete.
Accompanying the dragon will be floats, bands, kung fu schools and other groups, starting from City Hall through the 1000 block of North Broadway.
A three-day carnival begins Friday, 5-10 p.m., and continues Saturday and Sunday from noon-10 p.m., at Castelar School, 840 Yale St., Chinatown. Free. (213) 617-0396.
