A 69-year-old Reseda man, whose back-yard pool made him popular with neighborhood children, was sentenced Wednesday to a year in County Jail for molesting three girls, ages 12 and 13.

William (Bud) Brown, who was convicted in December of sexual battery and child molestation, also must serve six months of home detention upon his release and three years probation, Deputy City Atty. George Schell said.

Van Nuys Municipal Judge Michael E. Knight also ordered Brown, a retired machinist, to undergo counseling, to stay away from the three victims and to avoid contact with minors unless another adult is present.

According to Schell, the three girls testified during a six-day Municipal Court trial that Brown molested them and made inappropriate sexual remarks while they were at his house or swimming in his pool.

One victim said she was molested about a week after the Jan. 17, 1994, Northridge earthquake when she brought food to Brown’s home. She said she broke away and told her mother, who called police. The investigation led to the other two victims, Schell said.

After sentencing Brown, the judge observed that it would be impossible to provide restitution for the girls’ “lost childhood,” Schell said.
