A Port Hueneme police officer suffered a minor chest injury when his patrol car collided with that of a motorist who later was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said Thursday.

Officer Paul Gomez, 33, was driving north on Ventura Road near Redwood Street about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when a Datsun 280Z driven by 33-year-old Toan Thanah Nguyen of Stockton turned left into a small shopping center, police said.

Gomez tried to avoid Nguyen but broadsided the Datsun and wound up in the shopping center parking lot. He was treated and released at St. John’s Regional Medical Center. Nguyen and his male passenger were unhurt.
