COSTA MESA, NEWPORT BEACH : School Board to Put Time Limit on Meetings

Share

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District board will put a curfew on its meetings, which often run until midnight or later.

Trustee Edward H. Decker proposed the 11 p.m. cutoff for consideration of new items to prevent the board from making important decisions when members are exhausted.

He noted that the board voted to borrow money to invest in the Orange County bond pool and to roll that money over after the first year of investment in actions taken after midnight.

The board voted 7 to 0 to create a policy that would require a majority vote to begin discussions or take actions after 11 p.m. The board will recess to the following day if it does not complete its agenda in one night.

As part of the change, the board will have its closed-session discussions before open meetings.
