Shedding New Light on Savings : A no-frills liquidation outlet sells high-end lamps and chandeliers for prices below wholesale.

Share

It’s highly unusual to run across a bargain source that offers retail consumers a deal similar to what de velopers, contractors and decorators pay. This is one lamp and lighting fixture store that will take a while to get used to--the prices are that good.

Most of the items that were there the day I visited were marked way below wholesale. Ron Morrison, the store’s marketing consultant, has spent most of his working life in the marketing field of the lamp and lighting business and says he often dreamed about opening an outlet store for the liquidated and close-out merchandise he came across. Lighting Fixture Liquidators is the fruition of that dream.

Whether your style is traditional or contemporary, chances are you’ll find something you like. If it isn’t exactly what you’ve been looking for, you might change your mind when you check the price. Square beveled glass and 24-karat gold-plated wall sconces that retail for $150 were moving fast (four in a half-hour) at $34.90. You might think you’re reading the tag wrong when you see $229.90 for a 10-light formal chandelier from Italy, also with 24-karat gold plated brass and beveled glass. It’s not a mistake, just so far below the original $899.99 retail it seems like it is. A more casual lighting fixture, a simple five-light white chandelier, is $34.90 instead of $140.

One display features Tiffany-style hanging lamps, from round florals for $69 (retail $169) to a large rectangular fixture (like something you’d see over a pool table) that was $199.99 instead of the original $529.

For contemporary decor, stunning frosted and layered halogen wall lamps were $49.99 instead of the original $159.99. For a traditional or transitional foyer, there’s a deep bell jar-shaped entry chandelier with lots of glass and some brass for $119.90, a far cry from the original $459.

This store has only been open about two months and is still a little rough in places. For example, very few lighting fixtures can be shown lighted. Ken Morrison, the owner and Ron’s son, who practices law on the four days each week when the shop is closed, was accommodating and managed to light up one that I wanted to check out.

All items are first quality, and new merchandise arrives each week, so check to see what is on order. The Morrisons guarantee that everything electrical works and will check it before you leave. There are no deliveries, no installations, no returns. But at these prices, who needs those luxuries?
