FLORENCE : Meetings Scheduled on Habitat Proposal

Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit group that builds affordable housing nationwide, has scheduled a series of community meetings to discuss plans for a 41-home development near Watts that has drawn scorn from some residents.

The six weekly meetings, scheduled for Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m., will allow community members to ask questions and give their views on the proposed project at Santa Ana Boulevard and Alameda Street.

Some homeowners oppose the plan because they say it will cause nearby property values to fall. Habitat proponents counter that the units in the proposed development have been appraised at about $13,000 more than 60% of the homes sold in the area in the last 10 years.

“We’d like to have a presence in the community for a long, long time,” said Habitat spokeswoman Melody McCormick. “But to do that we need community support.”

The meetings will take place at Los Angeles County Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke’s Florence/Firestone district office, 7807 S. Compton Ave.
