Carter, Aides to Build 20 Houses This Summer
Former President Jimmy Carter and helpers will try to build 20 homes in South-Central Los Angeles this summer in five days.
Melody McCormick of the Habitat for Humanity International’s local chapter said the effort, which will begin June 19 and will be shown on national TV, is designed to help low-income families.
Capital Cities/ABC Inc., Walt Disney Studios, Carsey-Werner Co., Creative Artists Agency and Paramount are contributors to the project, which still needs funds and volunteers, McCormick said.
The Jimmy Carter Work Project is an annual event of Habitat for Humanity and is designed to raise awareness of the need for affordable housing, McCormick said.
Founded in 1976, Habitat works with people in need worldwide by building simple, decent shelter that is then sold to them at no profit through no-interest loans.
Funds, building materials and labor are donated by individuals, churches, corporations and other organizations. The agency is headquartered in Americus, Ga.
