Newport-Mesa

School District

Board of Education meeting

When: Today, 7 p.m.

Where: Harper Community Boardroom, 425 E. 18th St., Costa Mesa

What: The district board will review a list of budget cuts recommended by a task force of employees and community representatives and is expected to make at least a preliminary decision on which programs to trim or end.

The task force was charged with reviewing a 50-item list covering $11.7 million in possible cuts, then making recommendations with as much sensitivity as possible to the desires of the community.

Among the items on the list are discontinuing funding for the Environmental Nature Center, which would then be forced to rely on donations; districtwide staff reductions, and pay cuts.

The recommendations are designed as a sliding scale that would give the board the power to cut the lowest priority items first, then make additional cuts as needed. Because of the county bankruptcy, district officials anticipate they will have to cut between $3 million and $8.2 million from the 1995-96 budget.
