In the 1870s, the Santa Ana River was the scene of a political feud between Democrats and Republicans who gave names to the geography.

A group of squatters moved into wetlands in what is today Fountain Valley.

The squatters, all of them loyal Democrats, were so well-known for the their zealous religious beliefs that their community became known as Gospel Swamp.

A few miles north, another group of people settled. Members of this group were Republicans and didn’t get along with the Democrats of Gospel Swap.

Their enclave--in what is today southern Santa Ana--became known as Republican Bend.
