Group Selects Reading Tutors

Who: Fifteen volunteer tutors who are recent graduates of Literacy Volunteers of America’s 16-hour Basic Reading Tutor Training workshop.

Contribution: These tutors will provide tutoring services to adults who want to improve their basic reading, writing and spelling as part of the Huntington Beach Library’s Adult Literacy Services. Instruction is individualized and emphasizes goal-setting. Adults and teen-agers in need of literacy help or who want to volunteer as tutors can call (714) 375-5102 for more information.

LA PALMA

Hospital Trains Police in Life-Saving Skills

Who: Staffers at La Palma Intercommunity Hospital, including personnel from the Emergency Department.

Contribution: The City Council recently praised these hospital workers for helping train La Palma police in life-saving skills. The council also thanked Emergency Department staffers for raising $130 for the Police Department’s DARE anti-drug program. Emma Diones, paramedic in-service coordinator, represented the hospital during the award ceremony before the City Council. Officer John De Haan represented the Police Department.

Seats Are Open on Library Board

The City Council is looking for residents to serve on the Board of Directors for the nonprofit Public Facilities Corp. This board administers the business affairs of the Huntington Central Library. Hospice Offers Training Course

The Hospice of Saddleback Valley needs people to work with hospice patients and their families. The hospice helps the dying live their final days in the familiar surroundings of their home, close to family and friends. A Hospice volunteer training course will be conducted for nine Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. beginning March 1. Information: volunteer coordinator Kathleen Bunge at (714) 380-3175.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO

Ride to the Rescue of Joswick Center

The Fran Joswick Therapeutic Riding Center needs volunteers to groom and saddle horses. The center, which serves disabled children and adults, also needs instructor assistants to work as spotters and stirrup adjusters. The center also is recruiting people to do office work or be greeters at events. Information: (714) 240-8441.
